Artist Chosen:
Cheng Shuk Yee, EASTMAN (耳屎人)
Eastman was creating rubber sculpture in Chinese Arts Centre, Manchester |
Cheng Suk Yee, Eastman is a Hong Kong local artist of soft sculpture. She is one of the artists operating studio in Fotanian. She is an MFA graduate of the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
Eastman graduates from Chinese University of Hong Kong in Fine Arts in 2000. After graduation, she focused on her design job. Because of job nature, she began to develop the form of art work from plane to solid. Since 2003, Eastman started to create rubber sculpture and put it in the vending machine for sale at
a low price. Because she thinks that rubber is the material which she can easily handle and able to make diversified design without the assistant from professional craftsman. With limited budget, Eastman choose to use the rubber as medium.
Eastman then figures out that she would like to have further enhancement in her art work. Therefore, she finished the Master of Fine Arts in the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2009. She became a full-time artist in recent years. She now mainly focuses on creating imitated furniture sculpture by using fabric and wood. Eastman also works with some associations like Hong Kong Arts Centre and Hong Kong Institute of Aesthetic Education to hold workshops for teaching drawing.
Reason to choose Eastman:
I think Eastman's artwork is apparently different from normal artists. Usually, sculpture is in hard format. However, Eastman mostly uses wood and fabric to complete a soft sculpture. This gives me a new idea about what sculpture can be. So, I would like to have further understanding about her. Besides, Eastman's art works are tiny, precise and colorful. This kind of style is very attractive. Therefore, I want to explore her art world.

I know it may sound irrelevant but I am curious about the Chinese name of Eastman. Why does Eastman translated the name “Eastman” in 耳屎人(earwax man). To be honest, the Chinese name sounds wired especially she is a lady. Can it be a reason that Eastman hopes to create a kind of tight bond with general public that she chose a vulgar (funny) Chinese name?
回覆刪除Besides, I am wondering about the theme of her artworks. You mentioned that “Most of your finished art works look like real furniture.” Has she ever thought of immersing her artworks into real life? Some artists immerse artworks into furniture and make them really useful, so has Eastman thought of it?

I like this artist very much once I visit your blog. I went to do some research about this artist. I totally agree with you about the uniqueness of Eastman Cheng’s art work. Most of her works are colorful which delights me. I prefer her “Landscape Furniture” series than her “mountains and rivers” art works.
回覆刪除Her major exhibitions- “Swimming Pool” (2009) is really amazing. “Miniature Landscape” (2010) is also fascinated me as it was a bus-inside appearance which made of plastic leather、MDF board、fabric、sponge. This work is by seeing through the bus window, we can observe things around us in order to review, imagine our past and future. This is quite meaningful and inspired art work. As you have mentioned you are usually neglect your surrounding stuff. This is the work that can exactly encourage people to raise their awareness. Do you like it?
Very nice and informative blog and it will be better if you insert more photos in your blog.

Actually, I was attracted by the name of your artist. It seems that she is a funny person. As you have mentioned that normal artists use hard format to do sculpture but Eastman is different as she uses wood and fabric. However, I think that wood sculptures are very common in the world. Anyway, it is good that Eastman provide you with a new idea of sculpture. Moreover, I think you are also put some of her works on the blog. I want to know more about her works by seeing the images as it is quite hard to imagine by looking at the words.

Eastman’s art work really can attract girl’s attention, as her work are colorful and cute, especially the sculpture made by fabric. I found that many of her work are the stuff we can meet in daily life, such as flowers, bowl, egg, etc. Her works can trigger my childhood memory as they look like the tiny toy that I played when I was small, also, I would like you spend money to buy her art work. But I have a question would like to ask you, as she focus on creating imitated furniture sculpture by using fabric and wood, but how many of them can be the real furniture? Or they just can be view as art work for appreciation?

We seldom hear soft sculpture in Hong Kong. It is surprised that Eastman started to create rubber sculpture since 2003. I just heard rubber sculpture this year. Afterward, I tried to make it myself as it is really funny and I can use it as a stamp to decorate my own stuffs or stamp on cards and send to my friends. Actually it is hard for me to create such rubber sculpture since it is difficult to control and I can only create some simple pattern due to the limited ability. She is an unusual artist in Hong Kong. It is better if you can show more about her works since as a viewer, I am quite interested to see her works.

I really appreciate the efforts you have put in doing the research of the artist. Your research findings are presented in a logical and organized structure. The information you provide is thorough and your analysis is detailed as well. I entirely agree with your point that Eastman's art works are colorful that make me feel delighted and positive. I do think her art works can help cheering up my tough life since I feel relaxed at the time I'm appreciating her art works. I also discover that Eastman's art works are tiny and I know it is difficult to make such refined sculpture thus I definitely appreciate her good craftsmanship in making sculpture. Eastman's art works certainly raise my interest in exploring more of her art world and the stories for her to create the sculpture. Moreover, I think it is good that Eastman applying her personal experiences to her art works as it can increase my understanding about her. One point I would like to raise is that you mention most of Eastman's works are furniture and look similar as the real one but could you show us some pictures as I am very curious. And I think it would be better if you can show us more of her art works. Last but not least, Thank you for introducing me a good artist.

I agree to Elise’s opinion that Eastman's art work is quite unique. The artworks of the artist mostly are furniture. Although those artworks may not practically useful, her work is refined and similar to the real object. Since furniture is closely related to our normal living, the artist’s work feels like essential and fundamental within our living. In addition, Eastman’s artworks are colorful which spread positive message. When people see her works, they will feel delighted and warm. The artist use several materials such as wood, rubber and fabric to form her artwork which is simple and unique. One thing I would like to suggest to my classmate is that trying to attach more photos or pictures to post on the blog so as to give more insights to the audience.

When we hear the term"sculpture",we usually think of some Greek style sculpture which is very hard. However Eastman's artwork is totally different from what i just say.Instead she use some soft materials like fabrics and wood to make her artwork. It was quite amazing to me and i am really interested in her artwork.Firstly, I am appreciate of her artwork which is unique .I can say that i have see some art work like this .It was really eye-opening.Her style is very lovely which really eye catching.I believe that it would definitely attract the girls to keep tract on her works.

I agree with her that Eastman's art works are very unique, decent and full of personal experiences. After looking at part of Eastman’s art works, I found that most of them are furniture and she used to obtain inspirations from personal feelings and experiences. Also, the artist’s works are colorful, making me felt relaxed and joyful after having a look at them. She used to present her works in the form of soft sculpture and installations. Landscape is always being integrated to her work. What surprised me was that wood and even fabric can be used as mediums to create art works as well.
